Description
This advanced clinical training explores the application of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy with individuals experiencing obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety disorders, and phobic responses. Participants will examine how maladaptively stored experiences, fear-based learning, and distressing memories may contribute to the development and maintenance of obsessive-compulsive symptoms and phobic avoidance behaviors. The training will review current research regarding EMDR and OCD treatment outcomes while exploring how EMDR may be integrated with evidence-based approaches such as Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP).
Participants will explore practical applications of EMDR for intrusive thoughts, contamination fears, panic responses, avoidance patterns, and trauma-related obsessive symptoms. Ethical considerations, case conceptualization strategies, treatment planning, and clinical limitations within the research literature will also be discussed, including the distinction between trauma-driven obsessive symptoms and primary OCD presentations. Clinicians will leave with practical interventions and integrative approaches for using EMDR with clients experiencing OCD and phobias.
Learning Objectives
- Identify core symptoms, clinical presentations, and maintaining factors associated with OCD and phobic disorders.
- Describe the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model and explain how maladaptively stored experiences may contribute to anxiety, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, and phobic responses.
- Demonstrate how EMDR protocols can be adapted for clients experiencing OCD and phobias, including identification of past experiences, present triggers, and future fears.
- Examine current research regarding EMDR and OCD treatment outcomes, including emerging evidence supporting EMDR as a complementary intervention alongside Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP).
- Explore EMDR interventions designed to address intrusive thoughts, avoidance behaviors, physiological distress, and fear-based responses associated with OCD and phobias.
- Apply integrative case conceptualization strategies and treatment planning considerations when determining the appropriateness of EMDR, ERP, or combined interventions for OCD and phobic disorders.
