This play therapy training is offered Live In-Person and Virtual via Zoom Platform. This training is geared towards play therapists, who did not have formal play therapy training as a part of their education. The basics of play therapy history, theory, toy selection, and skills will be included to expand knowledge for working with children in a way that is grounded in child-centered theory. There will be a focus on building the parent/ therapist alliance and areas to explore during intake to enhance play therapy practice. Participants will have the opportunity to practice basic play therapy responses and skills to implement in play therapy sessions.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe play therapy and its benefits for helping children heal
  2. Explain the history of play therapy and theory
  3. Utilize knowledge of how to make play therapy therapeutic through the selection of toys and designing of a playroom
  4. List important areas to explore during play therapy intake sessions
  5. Plan how to build a strong play therapy alliance for the play therapist and parent
  6. Identify Child Centered Play Therapy skills to use in play therapy sessions

Jaime Colatriano, LPC-S, RPT-S, EMDR TRAINED

Jaime Colatriano joined the Center for Counseling and Family Relationships in 2014. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from the University of North Texas in Human Development and Family Studies with a minor in Counseling in 2004.  Jaime also completed her Master’s degree in Counseling at the University of North Texas in 2010.  She received her License as a Professional Counselor in 2012 and became a Registered Play Therapist in 2013.  Jaime is EMDR Trained and is a Certified Prepare Enrich Facilitator to give couple’s assessments. Prior to becoming a counselor, she worked for an Early Childhood Intervention Program, for 5 years, where she utilized knowledge about typical child development and gained experience in collaborating with school districts to help children and their families obtain appropriate services.

Emily Oakes, LPC

Emily Oakes joined the Center for Counseling and Family Relationships in 2019. She earned her Master’s in Professional Counseling from Liberty University. Prior to becoming a counselor, Emily completed her Bachelor’s at UTA specializing in elementary education. She taught for many years working with gifted and talented students and struggling learners.  Emily’s previous counseling experience includes working with child victims of abuse and their families. She also worked in a non-profit practice setting where she worked with children, adolescents, couples, and adults of all ages.
