Family Play Therapy Techniques

This play therapy training is offered Live In-Person and Virtual via Zoom Platform. ​Family play therapy techniques facilitate exploration and opportunities for change in every member of the family system. By identifying attachment styles of caregivers and children, the play therapist can select family play therapy techniques to facilitate exploration of unhealthy patterns and behaviors. This workshop will address goals and progression for family play therapy sessions and techniques for keeping each family member in their window of tolerance during family play therapy sessions. Video examples of family play therapy activities will be shown for participants to prepare responses for addressing unhealthy patterns and behaviors.


Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify attachment styles of caregivers and children in family play therapy
  2. Describe the goals and progression for family play therapy sessions
  3. Select from family play therapy techniques to keep family members in the window of tolerance
  4. ​Select from family play therapy activities that facilitate the exploration of unhealthy patterns and behaviors
  5. Prepare responses to family play video examples of how to address unhealthy patterns and behaviors
  6. Plan a family play therapy activity with contribution from each group member

Virtual Training Information

  • If you register for the Virtual Classroom training, make sure you have a good WIFI connection.
  • Your computer will need a camera for you to be visible throughout the entire training to receive the certificate.
  • We will be using Zoom for the training, and I will send you a link by Tuesday evening.
  • You will need to download the Zoom program to be able to use the link.
  • All homework is due by e-mail to Dr. Johnson by the first day of the training.
  • Please note that during the training we only take a short 30 min. lunch break and have a short break in the morning and the afternoon.

Dr. Rhonda Johnson is and LPC-S, LMFT-S, RPT-S, who has been working with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families in private practice since 1999. She became a TBRI Practitioner in 2011 for her specialty of working with children who have been adopted domestically or internationally, children in state foster care, and children who have experienced trauma. Dr. Johnson is also an EMDR Consultant in Training and a Somatic Experiencing™️ Practitioner in Training. She incorporates knowledge from each of these theories and perspectives into her work with families in Family Play Therapy sessions.

Dr. Johnson is the owner of a large group private practice, the Center for Counseling and Family Relationships, which was established in 2007. She is also the owner of CCFAM Training, established in 2012, specializing as a Live, Virtual, and Online CEU provider with a focus on supervision, Texas Ethics, play therapy, and children who have experienced trauma. Through CCFAM Training, Dr. Johnson also provides private practice coaching and consulting for mental health professionals in leadership and supervisory roles.


Due to COVID-19 health concerns, this one-time online event has been approved by APT for 6 CONTACT CE Hours. Completion of post-test will be required. Please email us at if you are interested.


This training is non-refundable, unless cancelled by training provider. Event will be cancelled if fewer than 5 participants.


Center for Counseling and Family Relationships Training has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 7105. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Center for Counseling and Family Relationships Training is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.
