Addressing Developmental Trauma in the Playroom

Think of a child you have had in your playroom with perplexing symptoms that do not fit into diagnostic boxes. Diagnosed with ODD, DMDD, IED, and bipolar disorder by different providers. Perhaps the client experiences perplexing psychotic features. This training addresses how to build rapport with “difficult” clients, assess for preverbal and developmental trauma, teaches stabilization skills for fight, flight, and freeze responses, discusses how to address traumas that the client has no memory of, and explains the role of the therapist as the client reintegrates back into normal life.

  1. Explain how to identify and assess for developmental trauma in both parent sessions and play therapy sessions.
  2. Discuss the importance of stabilization work before processing developmental trauma in the play room.
  3. Explain how reintegration occurs through the child’s journey towards healing and the play therapist’s role in this phase of treatment.
